Our Specialisms, Treatments & Medical Services
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology offers preconception care, prenatal care, prenatal medicine and all types of assistance and treatment related to the delivery and post-natal care of mothers and their newborn children.
Preconception Counselling
Preconception advice is a type of consultation for women who wish to become pregnant. These women have (had) a medical problem such as a chronic disease or disorder, operations, previous complicated pregnancy and delivery, or congenital defects of the mother or one of their previous children. The consultation aims to clarify how the woman’s current medication may affect the pregnancy and the child, how the pregnancy may affect her disease, and what treatment and surveillance options exist in order to minimize the risk to mother and child. Women who want to conceive may be referred for an additional appointment with the department of Clinical Genetics.
Prenatal Care
Our prenatal care includes comprehensive check-ups at predetermined intervals. Our physicians, clinical midwives and specialized nurses will assist you throughout your pregnancy and birth. We provide prenatal screening to all women who wish to partake and who have an increased risk of having children with birth defects. If a defect or disease is suspected in the unborn child, we may offer prenatal diagnosis in collaboration with the department of Clinical Genetics.
Fetal Medicine and Genetics
Our physicians and geneticists are happy to provide consultation for pregnant couples who have an indication for prenatal diagnostic procedures. Upon medically justifiable indication, we may conduct amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling (CVS), laboratory services and advanced ultrasound (GUO). Please see our Fetal Medicine and Care page for more information.
Center for Congenital Heart Diseases
The Erasmus MC’s Center for Congenital Heart Diseases has special expertise in assisting women with congenital heart diseases who wish to become pregnant, who are currently pregnant, or women whose unborn child has a congenital heart disease.
